What is Difference between PRESSURE and STRESS ?

There are many similarity between Pressure and Stress like :-

• Both are ratio of force to area.
• Both have same units.

Difference between Pressure and Stress

There are many difference Pressure and Stress like :-

1. Pressure is External Force per unit area but Stress is Internal Resisting Force per unit area.
   
2. Pressure always act Perpendicular to surface, whereas stress may be Parallel or Perpendicular to surface.

         

    

    3.  Pressure is generally used for fluids, but stress is widely used for solids.

    4.  Pressure is always compressive but  stress may be either Tensile or Compressive.

    5.  Pressure is a scalar quantity but stress is tensor.

    6.  Pressure can be measured by any pressure measuring device but stress can't

          be measured by any device.

     7.  Pressure at a point is equal in all direction but stress at a point  is not equal in all

           direction.
